August 22, 2024 (KAUDA) – The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) civilian authorities led by Abdul Aziz Al-Hilu on Thursday reported 109 deaths due to malnutrition in four counties in the Nuba Mountains and South Kordofan regions.
On 13 August, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-N declared famine in the areas of South Kordofan and Blue Nile States under its control, which have a population of approximately 3 million people.
Arno Ngutulu Lodi, first secretary of the Civil Administration, told Reuters that the deaths occurred in Heban (27), Rashad (62), Lagawa (11) and Umdolin (9) districts.
He confirmed that Rashad County alone had 18,660 cases of malnutrition, mainly affecting children and the elderly. Data for other counties is still to be released.
The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-N calls the area it controls in South Kordofan the “Nuba Mountains” and the area it controls in Blue Nile the “New Rich Areas”.
