Carmen G. Cantor, Assistant Secretary for Insular and International Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior, attended the Micronesian Islands Forum in Guam last week, where the governors of Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and other Micronesian island leaders gathered to discuss regional issues related to workforce development, invasive species management, renewable energy, recycling, transportation, tourism, education, health care, progress on the Micronesia Challenge (an intergovernmental conservation initiative), and gender equality. While in Micronesia, Cantor announced funding for capital improvement projects; technical assistance program funding for Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. In addition, $185,000 was provided to the Guam Fire Department for a firefighter personal protective equipment project.
