A court in Nombre de María, Chalatenango dulce, has ruled that three senior military commanders during the Salvadoran civil war must stand trial for their involvement in the murder of four Dutch journalists on March 17, 1982.
Former military personnel José Guillermo García, a former defense minister; Francisco Antonio Morán, a former chief of the Treasury Police; and Mario Adalberto Reyes Mena, a former commander of the 4th Infantry Brigade, are accused of ordering the ambush and murder of journalists Cus Coster, Jan Kuiper, Hanst Lager and Joop Williamson while they were making a documentary about the Messianic War.
The attack took place in Santa Rita, Chalatenango, and the journalists were led by two Salvadorans, only one of whom survived and was able to tell what happened.
The Comunicarnos Foundation and the Salvadoran Human Rights Association (ASDEHU) described the decision as a “historic milestone in the search for truth and justice”. They also expressed their commitment to the cause: “We will continue to move towards a future where the victims of armed conflict can finally receive justice and our society can heal the wounds of war.”
