Microsoft postpones Windows Insider recall until October

Microsoft’s Recall feature is an AI-powered timeline Copilot+ Windows 11 on PCwill be available to Windows Insider program members in October. The feature was previously delayed due to concerns about unencrypted data storage.

Initially, Microsoft planned to release a public preview of Recall on June 18, but this plan was canceled due to the need to further solicit community feedback. The new plan was to launch the feature to Windows Insider members later that month, but this also did not happen.

Now, August 21st update Blog Posts Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Windows and devices, revealed the new timeline but did not explain the reason for the delay.

The company said: “We are committed to providing customers with a trusted and secure Recall (preview) experience on Copilot+ PCs, and are now announcing that Recall will be available to Windows Insiders starting in October.”

“As shared on June 13, before making Recall available to all Copilot+ PCs, we’ve adjusted our release approach to leverage the valuable expertise of the Windows Insider community.”

Davuluri also said that a new blog with more details will be published in October once the Windows Insider program begins rolling out. However, if it follows a similar trajectory to other features tested by Windows Insider members, it’s unlikely that Recall will be fully released for a few weeks or months.

Recall takes snapshots of a user’s activity on a Copilot+ PC, enabling generative AI to search through that activity to answer questions asked in a natural way. This can be useful for performing open-ended searches like “show me the spreadsheet my boss sent me yesterday,” but some security researchers have raised concerns about how those activities are stored.

The recall feature will be previewed in the Windows Insider program

Davuluri explained in a June 13 blog post why Recall was initially released only to Windows Insider members.

“We’re adjusting Recall’s release model to leverage the expertise of the Windows Insider community to ensure the experience meets our high standards for quality and security,” he wrote.

“This decision stems from our commitment to providing a trusted, secure, and powerful experience for all customers, and we are seeking additional feedback before making this feature available to all Copilot+ PC users.”

Microsoft notes that Recall works by following Safe Future Initiativeconstantly trying to improve security methods and practices.

Recall will be available to anyone with a Copilot+ PC after Windows Insider members have had a chance to provide feedback.

Microsoft changes recall feature from enabled by default to opt-in

On June 7, following security issues, Microsoft announced that it would make the “Recall” feature optional on Copilot+ PCs, rather than enabling it by default.

Although the company assured customers that Recall data would only be stored locally, security researchers such as Kevin Beaumont pointed out that an attacker wouldn’t even need physical access to a Copilot+ laptop to steal Recall data.

Microsoft subsequently made the following changes to how Recall works:

• Recalls will be optional.
• To use Recall, you need to enroll in Windows Hello (which lets you log in using facial recognition, fingerprint, or PIN instead of a password) and provide proof of presence, such as having your face visible on the laptop.
• Encrypts the search index database used by Recall. The data will also remain encrypted until Windows Hello authentication.

Microsoft faces security investigation

The change in the recall plan comes as Congress discusses Microsoft’s overall security posture. On June 13, Microsoft President Brad Smith spoke before the House Homeland Security Committee about A federal report This shows the security stance of Microsoft that led to the breach by a nation-state actor last year.

How does Recall compare to Apple Intelligence?

Apple’s response to Copilot+ PC is coming soon Apple Smartcreated in part through a partnership with OpenAI. Apple Intelligence primarily works by enabling Siri to answer more natural questions and providing the summarization and translation capabilities that generative AI has been shown to perform. Apple Intelligence runs on the device and on Apple servers when needed. Since it was only released this week, security researchers haven’t had much time to delve into how Apple Intelligence works.

But Apple, which incorporated AI into its laptops earlier than its competitors, seems to have a better understanding of potential security issues. At WWDC, Apple senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi said: “You shouldn’t have every detail of your life stored and analyzed by someone else’s AI cloud.”
