August 22, 2024 (Juba) – South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir formally accepted the credentials of Sudan’s new Ambassador Essam Mohamed Hassan, providing a diplomatic opportunity on how the two countries can engage more and work together to consolidate efforts and initiatives aimed at finding solutions to curb violence and restore peace and stability.
South Sudan’s leaders welcomed Hassan, a member of Sudan’s Sovereign Military Command Council, at a formal ceremony at the presidential palace on Wednesday.
The Democratic Republic of Congo’s special envoy to South Sudan, Freddy Kangudia Nkutula, also presented his credentials to Kiir.
“During a formal ceremony at the presidential palace, President Salva Kiir Mayardit accepted the credentials of two foreign ambassadors, further consolidating their respective countries’ diplomatic relations with South Sudan,” read a statement broadcast on state television. (IST).
The presidential press secretary dodged direct questions at a news conference on Wednesday about whether South Sudan is now working closely with the military to resolve a range of long-standing post-secession issues, including border demarcation or allegations of taking sides in Sudan’s conflict.
South Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ramadan Mohamed Abdullah Goch said that despite the current security and political situation, relations with Sudan have never wavered.
“The signal is clear because no head of state would accept credentials from an ambassador unless they recognise the government. In this case, the South Sudanese leadership treated the Sudanese envoy the same as other ambassadors, which clearly shows that they recognise Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and consider the current situation as an internal political matter,” he explained.
While South Sudan’s acceptance of Hassan’s credentials marks an important step forward, it remains unclear how South Sudan’s diplomatic presence will affect Kiir’s approach and efforts to end the conflict in Sudan, as he is one of the regional leaders with a direct interest in building a stable and peaceful neighbor.
Ambassador Hassan and the Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of the Congo expressed their commitment to promoting diplomatic relations between South Sudan and their respective countries.
In his speech to the ambassadors who received their credentials and appointments, President Kiir expressed warm welcome and good wishes for their appointments, and stressed the importance of diplomatic relations in promoting peace, cooperation and mutual understanding among countries.
