Puerto Rico received more than 176 million cyberattack attempts in the first half of 2024, with January and April being the months with the most activity, according to a report from Fortinet.
The cybersecurity company said the data obtained showed that the threat landscape continues to grow and evolve.
“We face an evolving threat landscape; cybercriminals continue to professionalize and use increasingly advanced and sophisticated identification and evasion techniques, which increases their likelihood of success,” said Layard Terrero, senior director of engineering for Central America and the Caribbean at Fortinet. “To protect against these advanced cybercriminal tactics, organizations should focus on enabling coordinated, actionable threat intelligence powered by real-time machine learning across all security devices to detect suspicious behavior and initiate coordinated mitigation actions across the entire ‘extended attack’ spectrum.” additional.
The report said that 44% of all ransomware and wiper samples targeted the industrial sector. Although ransomware detections fell by 70% compared to the first half of 2023, this is not all good news, as attackers have shifted from traditional large-scale distribution strategies to more concentrated strategies, with the energy, healthcare, manufacturing, transportation and logistics, and automotive industries being the hardest hit.
They said that in this situation, companies must be better prepared than ever to protect each of their assets, covering every part of the network surface from hardware and software to IoT devices, access points and remote devices. To this end, it is crucial to develop threat intelligence capabilities based on the use of technologies such as machine learning and artificial intelligence.
“Proactively monitoring and analyzing cyber threats helps identify vulnerabilities before they are exploited, enabling timely implementation of remediation measures for potential intrusion attempts. As enterprises aim to protect their assets and safeguard user privacy, artificial intelligence (AI) has positioned itself as a key player in the cybersecurity space,” said Terrero.
