At the Umno Youth Congress, Dr Akmal Saleh also issued a stern warning to “friends” not to talk about race, religion and royal issues.
(FMT) – The Umno Youth wing has called on the party to work hard to recapture the dominant position in the federal government, saying the party cannot be content with merely supplementing the position of other political parties in Putrajaya.
Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh said the party must aim to increase its current 26 MPs to two-thirds of the Dewan Rakyat seats.
“We do not want Umno to rest on its laurels and become a complement to other parties in the coalition government.
He told the Umno Youth Congress at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre today that Umno needs to re-emerge as the dominant party in the national political arena.
Akmal also issued a stern warning to allies in the coalition government not to touch on issues of race, religion and royalty, the so-called “3Rs”.
He insisted that the youth group would not mind making friends with anyone but said issues related to the 3Rs were non-negotiable.
He said: “We can be friends with anyone, but if you touch the ‘3R’ principle, we will fight to the end.”
The Melaka exco member said that over the past year, Umno Youth had shown an unwavering commitment to defending Malay rights and had been outspoken on issues such as the sale of socks with the word “Allah” printed on them at KK Mart.
In response to the incident, he initiated a campaign to boycott KK Mart stores.
He has also clashed with DAP leaders over issues including socks and the role of brewing companies in raising funds for Chinese schools.
“We have many problems like the KK Mart socks controversy, (alcohol) companies in schools, (the sale of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd shares), and so on.
“I could go on and on but these were the big issues of concern to the Malay Muslims that Umno Youth fought for. During that time, we saw other youth groups remaining silent but only Umno Youth stood up and spoke out,” he said.
Akmal also said that although he and Umno Youth were sometimes outspoken against the government, neither was an agent of Perikatan Nasional.
He said Umno Youth had made it clear that it would uphold the party’s core values of struggle despite being part of the federal government.
“We will defend Malay rights, Islam and the monarchy. Our clashes with our ‘neighbours’ have proven this so many times that people have accused me of being a Perikatan Nasional agent,” he said.
