I think Mangala played a political leadership role and put human rights, ethnic issues and reconciliation into practice. “Sudu Neluma” and “Mav Peramuna” are such examples. Regardless of Mangala’s political stance, he did not give up on ethnic issues and human rights.Mangala’s activism was not verbal. Mangala did not criticize the cassock nor Buddhism. It was not a popular idea at the time. That is why Mangala became a Buddhist hero. Mangala did not hide his sexuality. That is why he became a wedding butterfly. But Mangala continued his journey with laughter. It was a very consciously political journey.

I know very little about Mangala. This is also about Mangala, who bid farewell to parliamentary politics.

Exactly three years ago today, Mangala died of COVID-19. When politicians prayed for peace before their death, they lived an ugly political life that even death could not erase, and Mangala’s farewell made Mangala come alive. Those who did not mourn the death of any politician wept over Mangala’s death.

Many people today say it was an honorable existence…a wisdom…a political life…the departure of a man…that is why if Mangala exists in all this political chaos…today there is more discussion about dead Mangala than about living Mangala.

When I made the “Wedding Zone” for Mangala, everyone wanted to add some words about Mangala in it. By reading these articles, we can know a lot about the uninformed Mangala. All of them have written about the Mangala they know.

I think Mangala lived out his prime years in both his political and personal life after he retired from parliamentary politics. He had been freed from all the constraints of parliamentary politics. Mangala was looking back on his life. That is why he was able to stand up for what he truly believed in and speak out loudly…even admitting some of the mistakes he made in his political career.

That is why Mangala publicly said that he was responsible for this political mess. Whatever the criticism of Mangala’s political practice, it is important that Mangala has the courage to speak honestly about it… This is something that could never have been expected in the Sri Lankan political landscape. Unable to speak about national issues for votes… Unable to sincerely apologize for past mistakes… Mangala is unique in the political behavior of fascists when they came to power by talking about democracy.

He is going on a “honeymoon” to sort out the mess he himself got himself involved in. He believes in this journey of the younger generation. During the Rajapaksa regime, Mangala brought a new interpretation of true patriotism, against the false patriotism created by Wimal Weerawansara, against religionism and racism. A wave of young people around it is rising. Although Mangala said goodbye to that journey at the beginning, Mangala’s hope still burns.

Mangal believes in the power of people. He does not criticize people for the decisions they make in politics. He dreams of the emergence of more and more true patriots who know their rights. He works for this…

Mangala came out of Parliament to stand with the young people and did not stop for a moment to defend them. Even though we are with the young people, we are still playing the old records, Mangala said we are still here because in seventy-four years we have not found the answer to the old records.

In my short life, I have not experienced another politician who came out of parliamentary politics and was so liberal and surprisingly active in politics. Mangala is a joke when he opens his mouth, has done Tik Tok, played Vastila Maharaja Mangala, but he has fully shown who he is.

Mangala Everything starts with yourself. From the wedding space, everyone starts to be treated equally. The wedding is the first wedding for all of us.

When we were talking at the round table, if someone was silent, Mangala would talk to him in some way. He had the ability to joke and laugh loudly in the political discussion. If there was such a discussion in his home, he would listen to us while lighting a Hawaiian cigar. I don’t believe any politician in Sri Lanka has the patience to listen to others. But Mangala had enough time for others.
