SYDNEY (AUS) – Sphen, who rose to fame after fathering a chick with same-sex partner Magic in 2018, died on Thursday at the age of 11, the aquarium reported. Marine Life From Sydney, Australia.

Sfin, who belonged to the species “Pygoscelis papua”, also known as the gentoo penguin, gentoo penguin or waicha penguin, died earlier this month as an old man, as the average lifespan of a penguin is between twelve and thirteen years, according to a statement published by SEA Life, describing the death as sad.

Sphen’s most notable feat was successfully adopting and raising two chicks during his six-year pairing with Magic – Sphengic (Laura) in 2018 and Clancy in 2020.

“Sphin and Magic have a bond unlike most penguin pairs – they can even be seen together outside of the breeding season, which is unique to gentoo penguins,” the statement said.

But beyond their “love story”, Sphen and Magic, who have hosted a Mardi Gras float for Sydney’s LGTBIQ+ community and appeared in the Netflix series Atypical, have also contributed to promoting respect for sexual diversity and supporting messages of protection and action on the climate crisis, SEA Life added.

Little penguins live in the Subantarctic Islands, especially the Falkland Islands, the Antarctic Peninsula, and smaller colonies such as Macquarie Island in Australia. They can reach a height of 75 to 90 cm and swim at a very fast speed of up to 36 kilometers per hour.

Subantarctic penguins face many threats, including loss of habitat and breeding nests due to global warming, and consumption of plastic waste, which can be passed on to their offspring, often through the regurgitation of fish they eat.
