People in Vanimo, Papua New Guinea, say they need money to prepare for a visit by the Pope early next month.
Pope Francis will be in Papua New Guinea for three days from September 6, spending most of the time in Port Moresby but also making a brief visit to Vanimo.
A Catholic Church spokesman quoted The CourierHe said Vanimo locals were changing the town by hanging banners and mowing the lawns along the roadside.
But Father Miguel de la Calle said that while the provincial government has allocated funds, they need more to prepare.
He said people in the Barrow area were constructing a sidewalk and the pope was expected to pay for it out of his own pocket.
Bishop Rosario Menezes, president of the papal mission, said the mission is working closely with Vanimo’s organizing team and preparations are going well.
Pope Francis will travel to Vanimo on September 8.
