AKIPRESS website – The eHealth Center reports that by the end of 2023, maternal mortality in Kyrgyzstan will continue to decline.

The maternal mortality rate in 2023 was 26 per 100,000 live births. 38 women died during childbirth and the postpartum period. The Ministry of Health said the maternal mortality rate fell by 7.7% compared to 2022.

Maternal mortality rates remain high in Talas, Jalal Abad and Chui regions, and have also increased in Jalal Abad, Chui and Osh regions.

Five of the 38 cases involved migrants. Maternal mortality rates have declined in general health centres and maternity hospital delivery wards, but remain high in non-maternity hospitals.

Eight women died from hemorrhage, 12 from extragenital disease, seven from pulmonary embolism (PE), five from sepsis and preeclampsia, and one from uterine rupture.

Compared to 2022, PE cases increased by 20.6% and hemorrhage increased by 55.1%, while sepsis decreased by 40%, preeclampsia decreased by 9.6%, and extragenital diseases decreased by 19%.
