Mexico City (apro) – The superyacht Bayesian, owned by British tycoon Mike Lynch, sank off the coast of Porticello, Italy, in the early hours of Monday, August 19, leaving several people on board missing and dead.
Twelve of Lynch’s guests and 10 crew members travelled aboard the Bayesian to celebrate the Briton’s acquittal following a fraud trial in the U.S. Some of the Briton’s guests had been part of his legal team or had testified on his behalf at recent trials.
The 56-meter-long yacht with a 72.3-meter-long mast was reportedly anchored about 800 meters from Porticello Harbor when a small sea beam passed through the area. Angela Baccarat, wife of Mike Lynch, told Italian media La Repubblica that she woke up at 4 a.m. local time when the boat tilted.
Of the 22 people on board, 15 were rescued, including eight who were taken to hospital, according to Sicily’s civil protection agency, and all crew members survived except the cook, Riccardo Thomas.
The fate of Lynch himself remains unknown; his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch; Morgan Stanley International director Jonathan Bloomer (a defense witness during the trial) and his wife Judy Bloomer; and the U.S. lawyer who represented tycoon Chris Morvillo and his wife, fashion designer Neda Morvillo.
Among the surviving guests: Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Lynch’s firm Invoke Capital, her partners and their children, and Ayla Ronald, an employee at the law firm Clifford Chance, where Morvillo was a partner, according to the report. Your partner.
As of Wednesday, five bodies had been found, four of which were rescued on the coast but have not yet been identified by Italian authorities.
On Tuesday, divers were able to gain access to the interior of the vessel, but the operation was complicated by numerous obstacles and narrow passages, and the divers said they had only 12 minutes to reach and explore the scene before having to return to the surface. The vessel was reportedly about 50 meters underwater.
