Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz showed his frustration in a rare display by smashing his racket multiple times on court during his three-set loss to Gael Monfils at the Cincinnati Open.
In a round of 32 match that was suspended due to rain in the second set tie-break, the 37-year-old Monfils defeated second seed Alcaraz 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 to advance.
The Cincinnati Championship is one of the important warm-up tournaments for the U.S. Open, which opens in New York on August 26.
“I feel like this is the worst fight I’ve ever had in my career,” Alcaraz said.
“I’ve been practicing well. I feel good. But I can’t play. I want to forget about it and try to get to New York.”
The match was suspended due to rain and Alcaraz was trailing 1-3 in the tie-break and was hoping to get back on track when play resumed.
But the world number three couldn’t control his emotions.
“This has never happened before because I can control these feelings,” Alcaraz said.
“I just didn’t play well today. I felt like I wasn’t playing at all. It was really frustrating for me.
“There came a point where I didn’t want to be on the court anymore.”
Alcaraz was playing his first match since winning silver at the Paris Olympics, after losing to Novak Djokovic in the French Open final.
French veteran Monfils later faced 15th seed Holger Luhne in the round of 16 at Cincinnati, also one of the Masters 1000 events on the men’s ATP Tour.
After more than two hours of competition on the court, Monfils lost to Rune 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Men’s top seed and world number one Jannik Sinner won easily to advance to the quarterfinals to face sixth seed Andrey Rublev.
Sinner’s Australian opponent Jordan Thompson was forced to withdraw from the last 16 due to a rib injury
In the women’s draw, world number one Iga Swiatek advanced to the quarterfinals with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win over Marta Kostyuk.
No. 3 Aryna Sabalenka also advanced to the next round, beating Elina Svitolina 7-5, 6-2, but French Open and Wimbledon runner-up and world No. 4 Jasmine Paolini lost to Mira Andreeva 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
