9 people in Huye district take part in crackdown on illegal liquor

On Tuesday, August 20, 2024, an operation took place to break down the alcohol and arrest those who made it, and one of the things they took was a jar containing some participants who claimed that the alcohol was a thinner for mixing paint.
The men involved in the action wanted to demonstrate the evil nature of what was taken and one of them asked Butoya who had set fire to the things on the ground, causing one of the cans to explode, injuring bystanders.
An informant said: “You heard them tell them how bad it was, they told Butoya who took the fireball, when he fired it, it burned his whole chest and he became very ill. You were burned, the people who supported you, the number of those injured was seventeen in total.
However, Southern Province police spokesman SP Emmanuel Habiyaremye said in a phone text message that nine people were injured, but he did not say that anyone hit the plastic barrel containing the participants.
The injured were taken to Kabutere Hospital
“We went there and found 962 litres of illegal alcohol (Muriture). It was destroyed after educating people about its dangers, but we also seized two machines used to package illegal alcohol bottles and 14 packets of marijuana,” he said. “There were also two other 20-litre cans containing participants we don’t know about yet.”
He continued: “When they were taken to the vehicles for testing, one of them exploded and caught fire. Nine residents suffered serious burns and were taken to Kabutare Hospital for treatment. “Four of them have been released and an investigation has begun.”
The director of Kabutare Hospital, Dr. Jérôme Mfitumukiza, also said in a phone message that they received nine burns from the participants and said that they will be treated by doctors. According to reports, one of them has been taken to CHUB Hospital and all are likely to recover and resume normal activities.
