OpenAI expands its influence to more magazine and newspaper content

OpenAI has announced a partnership with Condé Nast that will see the Microsoft-backed AI company’s products, like ChatGPT and SearchGPT, be able to surface content from Vogue, The New Yorker, Condé Nest Traveler, GQ, Architectural Digest, Vanity Fair, Bon Appétit, and other outlets.

“With the launch of the SearchGPT prototype, we’re testing new search capabilities that make finding information and trusted sources of content faster and more intuitive,” OpenAI wrote in a blog post. “We’re combining conversational models with information from the web to provide you with fast, timely answers through clear, relevant sources.”

OpenAI added that the SearchGPT prototype provided direct links to news stories and that the company plans to “integrate the best of these features directly into ChatGPT in the future.”

This is the latest move in a recent trend of some media outlets partnering with artificial intelligence startups such as OpenAI to strike content deals.

In July, more than a month after being accused of plagiarism, Perplexity AI launched a revenue-sharing model for publishers. Media and content platforms including Fortune, Time Magazine, Entrepreneur, Texas Tribute, Der Spiegel, and WordPress were the first to join the company’s special publisher program.

In June, OpenAI and Time magazine announced a “multi-year content agreement” that will allow OpenAI to access existing and archived articles from Time magazine’s 100-year history. According to a press release, OpenAI will be able to display Time content in its ChatGPT chatbot to answer users’ questions and use Time content to “improve its products” or potentially train its own AI models.

OpenAI also announced a similar partnership with News Corp in May, allowing OpenAI to access current and archived articles from The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, Barron’s, the New York Post, and other publications. Reddit also announced in May that it would partner with OpenAI, allowing the company to train its AI models on Reddit content.

As AI-generated content spreads, news publications and other media organizations are actively working to protect their businesses.

The Center for Investigative Reporting, the nation’s oldest nonprofit news organization, sued OpenAI, a major Microsoft backer, in federal court in June for copyright infringement, following similar lawsuits by publications including The New York Times, Chicago Tribute and The New York Daily News.

Last December, The New York Times filed a lawsuit against Microsoft and OpenAI, alleging that news content that appeared in GPT chat training data violated intellectual property rights. The New York Times said it was seeking to hold Microsoft and OpenAI responsible for “billions of dollars in legal and actual damages” related to “unlawful copying and use of The New York Times’ unique and valuable works,” according to a document from the U.S. District Court for the Southern District in New York. OpenAI disagrees with the New York Times’ description of the incident.

The Chicago Tribune and seven other newspapers followed suit in April.
