Two suspects in a recent massacre on Cherry Tree Lane in Clarendon, which left eight people dead, made their first appearance in the Gun Court Division of the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court today.

Dushane Smalling, 28, also known as “Snowman”, of North Street, Maypen, and Leighton Whyte, 32, also known as “Banzi”, of Havana Heights, were each charged with eight counts of murder, eight counts of shooting with intent, eight counts of causing injury with a firearm, possession of a prohibited weapon and authorised possession of ammunition.

When the men appeared in court today, they filed an application to transfer the case to the Circuit Court.

The two are scheduled to appear in the High Court on September 16.

They are accused of killing Aiden Bartley, 7, Roger Messam, 48, Magaret Bonner, 40, Cavel Daley, 26, cashier Diamond Bennett, 20, butcher Errol Stewart, alias “Waga,” 68, Jermaine Boothe, alias “Black,” 33, and Lawrence Francis, 50, on August 11.

It is reported that at around 8:45 p.m. on the day of the incident, the two suspects, together with the deceased Steve Smith and other men who were attacked with pistols, drove to a community where a birthday party was being held and opened fire on a group of people.

The shooting left eight people dead and nine injured, including a one-year-old baby.

After the shooting, the three men reportedly left the scene in the car they arrived in.

Smalling was arrested after turning himself in, while White was arrested while reporting as part of his bail conditions.

Attorney Kemar Robinson represented Smalling, while Dwight Reece defended White.
