Jakarta(ANTARA) –
PLN Energi Primer claims that the replacement of coal with biomass co-firing in steam power plants (PLTUs) has generated a positive economic multiplier effect.
The company’s CEO, Iwan Agung Firstantara, explained that the multiplier effect involves 1.25 million people working in the biomass supply chain, from waste collection and production to building biomass ecosystems in 52 PLTUs in Indonesia.
“This circular economy generates revenue of 9.34 trillion rupees ($606.04 million) annually, provides energy to 1.25 million people and produces 10 million tonnes of biomass,” he said on Wednesday.
Co-firing is the practice of increasing the use of biomass renewable energy, which is derived from organic solid products such as rice husks, wood chips and palm shells.
In addition to the economic benefits, using biomass in steam power plants can accelerate efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2060.
“We are reducing emissions by 11 million tonnes per year,” Firstantara noted.
In 2021, PLN Energi Primer replaced 250,000 tons of coal with biomass. This figure rises to 500,000 tons in 2022 and 1 million tons in 2023.
“Our goal this year is to achieve more than 2 million tonnes of biomass co-firing,” he said.
