An Egyptian court rejected a request to release Ahmed Fateh, the left-back of Zamalek FC and the Egyptian national football team, ordering his continued detention and postponing his trial until September 16 next year.
Egypt’s Matrouh Criminal Court on Monday witnessed the first trial of Ahmed Fattouh, who was charged with manslaughter and drug offences after he ran over a police officer with his car while returning to Cairo from the city of El Alamein.
Fatouh’s defense lawyer, Ashraf Abdel Aziz, asked for his client’s release because the court knew where he lived and that he was the sole breadwinner for his family, and that the player needed to negotiate with the victim’s family to resolve the issue. According to Al-Youm Al-Sabea newspaper, they were unable to reconcile due to the advanced age of his parents.
Abdel Aziz requested a postponement because the victim had minor heirs, which required the appointment of a guardian before signing a settlement agreement with the player, and the court accepted the request, while Ahmed Fatouh remained in prison.
