A new Facebook Marketplace scam “has victimized Okanagan residents in Kelowna, British Columbia,” the RCMP said.
“In this scam, the potential buyer offers to pay the full price of the item and claims the funds will be electronically transferred to the seller, who is told to check their email for notification,” the RCMP said in a news release.
“After receiving the email, the seller is sent a link that takes the seller to a legitimate-looking bank webpage. The seller then enters their bank details and phone number and receives a verification code via SMS, which they also need to enter.”
Once all the information is entered, the scammers can directly access the victim’s bank account and transfer funds.
“This is an extremely sophisticated scam, a variation of the one-time password scam,” said Officer Laura Pollock, media relations officer for the Kelowna RCMP. “We encourage you to conduct market transactions in public places with security cameras.”
