Mangaia Bicentennial Celebrations Open with Grand Opening

The entire island of Mangaia suspended business on Saturday for the opening of the historic Bicentennial Celebrations, marking 200 years since the spread of Christianity on the island.

Hundreds of people gathered at the Bicentennial Main Stadium for the opening ceremony, which included the introduction of all the groups, the release of the theme song, the unveiling of the Bicentennial book, entertainment, an island feast (kaikai), and ended with a colorful fireworks display.

Metua Vaiimene, an island resident who was also involved, said the event was “on a higher level”.

“I think this is without a doubt the biggest event ever held on Mangaia Island, probably over 1,000 people. Even bigger than the triathlon series and Mangaia Island Games sporting events that have been held in the past,” Waimene told Cook Islands News.

“The opening ceremony was a colorful display of faith and culture that set the tone for the week-long celebration.

“For me, the highlights included the singing and dancing of the choir, especially the theme song. Particularly interesting was the presentation and presence of the descendants of the first Tahitian missions that brought Christianity to Mangaia 200 years ago.”

Vaiimene said the whole show was exhilarating, filled with proud Mangayi people and happy tourists.

“Numangatini Ariki hoped that these celebrations would serve as a catalyst for the religious, social, cultural, economic and overall development of Mangaia Island. I am sure that, as he envisioned, this event will have an impact on the future of our islands!

“It is great to see the hard work of the people of the island and the diaspora from around the world over the past three years come to fruition at the opening ceremony last night (Saturday), something we are all very proud of.” The celebrations will continue throughout the week, culminating in a closing ceremony on June 15.
