Minister Jeffrey Weaver: Fast ferries offer economic opportunities for Aruba and Corso

The possibility of introducing a fast ferry between Aruba and Corso Island has been explored for several years. After May 2023, Minister Jeffrey Weaver Together with Minister Ruisandro Cijntje, a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the economic field between Aruba and Corso was signed.

Over the years, collaboration has been initiated on different occasions to achieve common goals, including in areas such as fair trade.

Recently, different business groups have shown interest in launching ferry connections, first between Aruba and Corso and, at a later stage, with Bonello. As a result of the renewed interest, the Aruba Council of Ministers agreed in June 2023 to establish a Ferry Connection Committee, whose task is to advise on the necessary conditions for a ferry connection between Aruba and Corso.

According to the FOICE report, the Commission found that passenger ferries significantly simplify the necessary public conditions compared to ferries carrying both passengers and freight.

Aruba’s Council of Ministers approved the project’s advancement and last Friday, Minister Jeffrey Weaver Met with Corsu’s Minister of Economic Affairs Ruisandro Cijntje and agreed that Aruba and Corsu would work together to begin implementing this initiative.

Fast Ferry has also recently been incorporated as a project within Landspacket to promote trade in the Dutch Caribbean region. The Netherlands will provide technical assistance for implementation.

The project will be the first to be implemented between the two islands within the Landspakket framework. “This demonstrates the continued efforts in economic cooperation between Aruba, Korsu and the Netherlands,” said Minister Weaver.

“We have been working hard to get to this stage since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding,” said Minister Weaver. “Through this fast ferry project, Aruba and Corso hope to continue to strengthen the connection between our two islands and facilitate more trade between our sister islands.”
