(Daily Xianna) – Differences of opinion among coalition leaders, especially between DAP and UMNO, should not be seen as a burden in attracting Malay support.
Umno president and deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said these differing views were personal opinions only and did not represent the party’s official stance.
“At the moment, we accept these differences of opinion. All political parties welcome internal differences and if a party raises different opinions, these opinions tend to come from the middle or lower leadership rather than the top leadership.
“However, these differences become irrelevant once a decision is taken at the level of the Unity Government Secretariat.
“When a political party is seen as a burden (even though it is not really a burden), the key point is that the decision of the political party is still a priority as long as it is not biased towards any particular opinion,” he said in a special interview for the 2024 Umno General Assembly held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) recently.
Earlier media reports said that Umno and DAP leaders often blamed each other for their different opinions on various issues, causing tension in the country, including controversies such as the word “Allah” printed on socks of a convenience store chain and the cancellation of a comic strip event “Stripe of Unity and Beautiful Road (BRI)”.
Meanwhile, Zahid, who is also Umno president, clarified that the DAP top leadership had never been against discussing the status of the Malay rulers, the special rights of the Malays and the Malay language.
“You may not know that in Cabinet meetings, even when discussing issues such as the status of the Malay Rulers, the special rights of the Malays and the Malay language, the DAP never raised any objections, even though it was said that the party was very opposed to these matters.
“This is true because coincidentally, the leader of the party (DAP) sits to my right in Cabinet meetings. There has never been any opposition, it is just a perception,” he said.
He added that opponents had created this perception to portray discord between parties within the coalition government.
