There are now three days until thousands of runners begin the Iceland Bank Reykjavik Marathon, all with the goal of breaking some records. The Reykjavik Marathon celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.
High attendance rate
According to the announcement sent to the media by the race representatives yesterday, the number of people who signed up for the race this year increased by 50% compared to the same period last year, and more than 12,000 people signed up for the race yesterday. Runners came from all over the world, from 88 countries. Then it seems that the half marathon has been sold out, and there are few tickets left for the marathon and 10km run.
“For the second year in a row, the half marathon sold out very quickly, even though we added more than a thousand seats. There are only a little over 100 tickets left for the full marathon and less than 1,000 for the 10 km,” says Hrefna Hlín Sveinbjörnsdóttir, ÍBR Event Manager.
The collection is progressing smoothly
As the run progresses, donations are collected for various charities, with 199 million ISK raised last year. The goal is to break that record, but around 142 million ISK has already been raised, all of which will go directly to the 180 charities registered for the game.
“The funds raised have increased year by year and our goal has been to break the record, now that the race is celebrating its 40th anniversary. However, it is safe to say that this series has far exceeded our wildest hopes. The largest accumulation is usually in the last days before the race and the day after. Our goal in everything is to break last year’s record and to beat it a little bit more,” said Selma Smáradóttir, Project Manager at Íslandsbanki, in a press release about the race.
