Susco and Fico deliberately lied to the public to protect thieves. SaS to propose changes to the Criminal Code – National – Report

Justice Minister Boris Susko (Smer) and Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer) do not shy away from lying to the public just to protect thieves and free people from slavery. This was stated by Branislav Gröhling, chairman of the Freedom and Solidarity Party (SaS), at a press conference today.

“It’s absolutely outrageous. It’s not that these gentlemen are wrong, it’s that they are intentionally deceiving the public to protect thieves,” he said. He pointed to Susk’s statement that “the fact is that this is not a crime, it’s a misdemeanor, and it only applies to first offenses. Once you do it again, it’s the same crime as before.”

Susko believes the opposition has compelling reasons to remove him

However, this does not correspond to what the Fico government actually approved. As former Justice Minister Maria Kolikova (SaS) said, Susca obviously either has no idea of the impact of the amendment or is now seriously misleading and lying. The Criminal Code originally stipulated that if a person is already disabled by such an act within one year, it is no longer a misdemeanor but a criminal offense. However, Susca’s amendment removed it from the Criminal Code.

“He made a mess of justice here. He sacrificed Slovakia to help people who were criminally prosecuted, especially in the context of Smer, which was a revision of the Criminal Code that was made in his favor,” Kolikova said.

SaS noted that the number of thefts is increasing in Slovakia since the amendments were approved. “Commercial chains report an increase in thefts, even sports stores, the city of Trenčín says that thefts of scooters and other entities are increasing. This is because, according to the amendments to the Criminal Code, when the amount of theft is less than €700, it is not a crime but a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to €331,” Gröhling said.

For example, he said, if someone stole a phone for 699 euros, was caught and fined 331 euros, then the risk was worth it. “Then he could go to the next store next door and do the same thing,” said the SaS chairman.

Therefore, the SaS party is preparing multiple solutions in the field of criminal policy. Specifically, this will be an amendment to the Criminal Code, in which the setting of the amount of damage will be changed from 700 to 500 euros. “In addition, at the September session, we will propose amendments to the Law on Misdemeanors, following the model of the Czech Republic, in which the maximum fine for property crimes will be changed from 331 euros to 2,000 euros. Another key change is to ensure that the case of Dusan Kovacic and his release does not happen again. Therefore, we will amend the Criminal Code and, as requested by the minister, modify the conditions for the suspension of the execution of the sentence so that a ‘new Kovacic’ is impossible in Slovakia without a court ruling.”
