Major Hichem Meddeb, former head of security at the Ministry of Interior, spoke on the microphone of Zouhair Eljiss on Jawhara FM today (August 20, 2024).
The guest, who ran for president but was rejected, first discussed the increase in the number of constituencies. He stressed that they have increased from 27 in 2019 to 151 in 2024, and that no geographical limits have been set for each constituency. He noted that the number of required sponsorships has also increased compared to previous elections, since now each candidate must collect 500 instead of 400. He also believes that these conditions are an obstacle for those who want to run for public office. As a result, some of those responsible for collecting sponsorships, including those in power, use easily accessible databases for this purpose, especially those of trade unions, according to the former security chief.
Mr Medb argued that the electoral body (Isie), which has the adjective “independent” in its name, is not and cannot be independent because its members were appointed by the outgoing president, another presidential candidate. He said Isie simply sent him an email rejecting his application, whereas he submitted over 10,000 sponsorships, of which 6,000 were verified by its collection team and the rest could be replaced or corrected during the review of the documents, according to a recorded statement issued by the official spokesperson of the electoral body.
He also made a proposal on the upcoming elections, asking the president to intervene and allow the 17 candidates who presented themselves to the electoral body to run as official candidates, saying that the presidential race with only three candidates was just a farce.
