Series of steps:

Customs sources revealed that some detachments and smugglers clashed in the Damascus countryside, people who were traveling to Damascus from the suburbs of Qalamoun in a van, were intercepted in the Hafir area, smuggling items, and after an exchange of fire, members of the detachment shot at the wheels of the van, intercepted the smugglers using the van, and seized most of the air conditioners and clothes (bags). After the confiscation, the matter was transferred to the competent authorities for handling, and the legal procedures against the smugglers were completed after the smugglers took the initiative to shoot at the customs officials who were on duty.

Meanwhile, another clash took place on the Assad Suburban Bridge in the Damascus countryside, when a Mercedes was stopped and its occupants (smugglers in the car) were arrested, apparently loaded with goods. Smuggled cigarette boxes were confiscated and a case was opened against the offending organization.

At the same time as the clashes in the Damascus countryside, a worker at the Nasib border crossing explained that a large amount of agricultural materials (seeds and medicines) enter illegally, which avoids them being monitored, tested and ensuring their safety. Most of these agricultural materials are damaged, adulterated and unhealthy, and lead to soil destruction and the production of unhealthy agricultural varieties and products. This coincides with the smuggling of hundreds of (solar) panels and batteries and their transportation to local markets in the southern regions, some of which reach markets in Damascus and its countryside.

Although the Customs is dealing with cases of seized smuggled goods, many observers believe that the fight against smuggling lies in a number of measures that run parallel to the work of the Customs, the most important of which is to allow a state of equilibrium between the demand and the supply of goods whose entry into the local market has been blocked, according to the import rationalization program that has been implemented for many years and is well documented. The government has expressed its intention to reduce import bills, but this does not convince some people interested in business and economic work. Because they see that many of the goods and goods that are prohibited from import are entering through smuggling, which makes the import rationalization program unfeasible, especially in terms of guaranteeing foreign exchange, because foreign exchange is depleted through smuggling. The local market introduces goods of unknown origin that have not undergone the necessary safety tests and verifications, especially food and medical materials that directly affect the safety of consumers.

A member of the Damascus Chamber of Commerce confirmed: The main reason for smuggling, especially of materials that are allowed to be imported, is to evade the problem of financing through platforms, because the process of financing through platforms takes more than 6 months, and financing through platforms usually increases the cost of imports to more than 30%, and in some cases up to 50%, especially when importers seek financing from others in exchange for an agreed commission. The reason why merchants choose this option is either the lack of sufficient financing or the long-term lack of idle funds, resulting in capital turnover losses due to delayed financing, and the platform lasts for months, losing part of the actual value of the capital due to price inflation.
