San Salvador. On Tuesday, Alajuelense, led by Costa Rican-Brazilian Alexandre Borges Guimaraes, defeated Ariansa 1-2, ending the Salvadoran club’s aspirations to advance to the CONCACAF Cup quarter-finals.
In a match held at the Cuscatlán Stadium in San Salvador, the Alboz del Union team, led by Salvadoran Jorge Rodríguez, failed to defeat the Alajuelense team, which was the favorite in the fourth round of Group B of the regional championship.
In the league game, it was obvious that Marvin Monterosa was absent, who was a key player in assists and was unable to play due to the Cards stacking.
Meanwhile, Costa Rica’s Diego Campos scored twice to secure victory, ensuring Alajuelense’s progression to the quarter-finals.
Alajuelense showed their dominance in the first five minutes of the game, with Brazilian Anderson Canhoto having a first-time shot, but his shot went wide.
Costa Rica’s persistence paid off in the sixth minute of the game, when League player Henry Romero made a poor clearance in the penalty area and the ball was passed to the left foot of 28-year-old Diego Campos, who scored the goal. He did not waste the opportunity and scored a goal for the team, 0-1.
With this goal, Campos has accumulated 4 goals in his personal account in the Central American Cup.
After the goal, Uruguayan player Angelo Rodriguez created some goals towards the opponent’s goal, but his teammates Narciso Orellana and Juan Carlos Portillo did not follow, so the UAE did not equalize the score.
After 20 minutes, the tempo of the game slowed down and Alianza made the first forced substitution on the field, replacing the injured Mario Jacabo and activating Ivan Mancia.
In the 36th minute, Arriña created a good chance, but Rodriguez failed to score. Alajuelense sought a second goal before the end of the first half, but failed to achieve it and entered the halftime with the minimum score lead.
Union’s Albos applied pressure early in the second half and came close to a tie with a brilliant performance in the 47th minute.
Uruguayan Rodriguez passed the ball to Emerson Mauricio in the penalty area, who looked for former Alajuelens player Leonardo Mengivar, whose powerful shot hit the right post, deepening the Union fans’ cries for a goal.
In the 50th minute, Canioso came on the field again, and his shot was saved by white goalkeeper Mario Gonzalez.
When Alianza was about to score the first goal, Alajuelens passed the ball to Brazilian Canhoto in the 56th minute, who saw Campos and passed the ball to him.
Costa Rica’s joy in taking the lead lasted only a few minutes, because in the 63rd minute, Arriña’s discount came from Emerson Mauricio, who, after receiving a pass from Uruguayan Rodriguez, beat Canadian Manjerecar James to score 1-2.
