August 20, 2024 (Dain, El Fasher) – Sudanese warplanes carried out a series of deadly airstrikes in the Darfur region and central Sudan on Tuesday, killing dozens of civilians and triggering retaliatory shelling by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The airstrikes targeted the cities of Dane, El Fasher and Tawisha in Darfur, and Hasahisa in Jazira state. Dane, the historic capital of the Rizeigat tribe and a stronghold of the Rapid Security Forces, was particularly hard hit.
At least 15 people were killed and dozens injured in an attack on a teaching hospital and a center for displaced persons in Al Dayen.
Local activists and journalists reported widespread destruction and civilian casualties, with video footage showing the aftermath of barrel bomb attacks. Sudan’s military has not yet commented on the airstrikes.
In response to the airstrikes, the Rapid Support Forces shelled civilian areas in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, causing further casualties and exacerbating the growing humanitarian crisis in the region.
In April, fighting broke out between Sudanese troops and the Rapid Support Forces, killing thousands and displacing millions. Darfur, which suffered a devastating conflict in the early 2000s, has seen violence flare up again, with atrocities against civilians making headlines.
The international community has condemned the violence and called for a ceasefire, but efforts to broker a lasting peace have so far failed. The recent airstrikes and retaliatory shelling highlight the country’s deteriorating security situation and the urgent need to resolve the conflict.
