The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Explosive Ordnance Disposal Department (EODD) today (20 August 2024) safely cleared 202 items of unexploded ordnance (UXO) from St Nicholas School.
The demolition was prompted by the discovery of a stockpile of U.S. shells when the school dug a hole in front of a staff dormitory to drain sewage.
“In total, more than 200 US projectiles have been moved to a secure location at Hell Point with the support of the Australian Defence Force and now await safe destruction,” said Inspector Clifford Tunuki, Acting Director of EODD, Royal Australian Armed Forces.

EODD officers turned the UXO over to other officers for storage in a safer location for transport.
Officer Tunuki said: “Now, the surrounding area is safe and the school can carry out teaching activities normally. All unexploded ordnance has been safely evacuated from the school. We encourage parents and guardians to bring their children to school.”
Director Tunuki said: “This incident is a real wake-up call for schools, homes and businesses to seriously consider whether the site is checked for unexploded ordnance before they start constructing buildings.”

To safely remove UXO, EODD officers excavate UXO during operations.
Mr Tunuki said: “I urge everyone to report anything suspicious, such as a bomb, to EODD at 7495215 or the police free line 999.”
St Nicholas Anglican College confirmed to police that the school will remain closed and classes will resume on August 22, 2024.
