Moroccan law allows cultivation of medical marijuana
The decision comes after Morocco passed a law in 2022 allowing the Kingdom to grow cannabis for industrial and medical purposes, especially since, according to the United Nations (UN), Morocco was the first country in the world to purify cannabis.
King Mohammed VI of Morocco pardoned on the evening of Monday, August 19, 2024, 4,800 people wanted by the judiciary, as well as others who have been indicted by the courts or have been tried and sentenced by the courts for crimes related to illegal cannabis plants.
This was a decision announced by the Ministry of Justice ahead of the celebration of the “Revolution of the King and the People” holiday, which Morocco celebrates every year to commemorate the expulsion of French colonizers who tried to put Mohammed Ben Arafat outside the throne. This day is celebrated every year on August 20.
According to RFI, the amnesty is for 4,800 farmers engaged in illegal cannabis cultivation, with the aim of helping these farmers reintegrate into society and cultivate so that the cannabis they grow can be used for medicinal or pharmaceutical as well as industrial purposes, as it is approved by Moroccan law.
However, the only urban agriculture permitted is in three rural areas in the Rif region northeast of Malak.
Mohamed El Guerrouj, director general of Morocco’s cannabis-related activities control agency, said: “The Moroccan king’s pardon will help these farmers and their families live a peaceful life because they are doing this small-scale activity.” Cannabis growers have been living in fear for years, fearing that they could be arrested at any time.
The director also said the amnesty was an important step in ending the illegal cultivation of cannabis, passing laws that allow the cultivation of other crops instead of cannabis, and enacting about 200 laws in less than three years.
