Officials have confirmed that four people have been killed and 83 injured in snake attacks since heavy rains hit large parts of South Aweil County in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Avernan County Commissioner Luka Thel Thel revealed that between June and August this year, 87 people were attacked by snakes, and four died despite the authorities’ best efforts to save them.
“Four people did die from snake bites. The total number of snake bites in South Aweil County is 87 and it all started with the heavy rains. There are so many snakes and we are now attending the funeral of one of the victims,” said Searle.
The Commissioner pledged his government’s commitment to addressing the hazard.
Piol Geng Ariath, Paramount Chief of Buonchuai Community in Tiar-Aliet Payam, South Aweil Regency, acknowledged reports of snake bites and mentioned a recent snake bite incident where a 12-year-old girl lost her ability to fight off the bite after two days.
He said: “The report by Avernance County Commissioner Luca Serre is true because we lost a 12-year-old girl on Sunday.”
The girl died on the way to the hospital, the sheriff said.
Local health worker Deng Chan Chan expressed appreciation for WHO’s past donations of antivenom and other medicines to medical institutions in the region.
He expressed frustration over limited medical treatment and the increasing number of snake bite cases.
“Previously, WHO provided antivenom and whenever there was a snake bite incident, we could easily use them to respond. I don’t know what has happened recently,” he said.
