“I personally think that the LUMA contract should be cancelled and of course there has to be some evaluation of that contract and that’s why I have to staff It is under review, but I think the government of Puerto Rico now has to reevaluate the LUMA contract that will take effect this December, through the Attorney General, the Energy Bureau, the public-private alliance. “This year, look how it was annulled,” said Jenniffer González in a Facebook Live on her social network.
This morning, in an interview with WKAQ 580 radio station, the resident commissioner changed her mind and said canceling the contract would be too costly, and she suggested forming an entity to regulate LUMA Energy.
“I hoped, and I said it at the beginning of the award of the contract, that the Attorney General should evaluate the contract terms of a lion contract that does not defend the interests of the Puerto Rican people, González Colon said in a radio interview (WKAQ 580).
He also said LUMA might stir up trouble to justify cancelling the contract and thus receive greater compensation.
“Sometimes I wonder if all these things LUMA said and did aren’t an excuse to walk away and charge more because the contract was cancelled,” he added.
González Colon clarified that while he wanted to cancel the contract, it would be irresponsible to do so because This means a cost for Puerto Rico.
“Canceling a contract like this would immediately cost the people of Puerto Rico a lot more,” he said. Instead, it recommends creating a working group, led by a “czar,” dedicated to ongoing oversight of LUMA and implementing clear metrics and consequences for any violations by the company. “I think one of the things we have to do is set metrics, set standards, always review the contract and have a committee… responsible for monitoring and follow-up.”
