In an interview with Niger’s official newspaper, Sahel regionBrigadier General Ibrahima Issa, Governor of the Agadez Region, gave an overall overview of the challenges facing the region, with a particular emphasis on security and economic challenges.
The Governor said that while the security situation has improved over the past year thanks to the efforts of the Defence and Security Forces (FDS), the region remains threatened by non-state armed groups and organized crime syndicates. He welcomed operations undertaken to dismantle these networks, particularly those targeting drug and arms trafficking. However, despite significant progress in restoring order, residual insecurity persists, particularly along transport routes and in some towns.
On the economic level, the Governor insisted that sovereignty must be understood not only from a governance perspective, but especially from an economic perspective. The Agadez region, rich in mineral and geological resources, especially uranium, coal and gold, has great potential and can become a lever for sustainable development in Niger. However, he stressed that this potential remains largely underutilized.
Agriculture and animal husbandry are the backbone of the regional economy, but they have been severely affected by climate disasters and marketing difficulties. The “Big Water Conservancy” program initiated by CNSP can better develop the vast irrigated land in the region and promote economic growth.
The Governor also stressed the importance of collaboration between the people, the defence forces and the state to ensure the security and prosperity of the region. He called for greater collaboration to address common challenges.
Finally, the Governor of Agadez expressed confidence in the region’s ability to overcome these challenges through optimal resource development and close collaboration between the different stakeholders.
