Wakiso – KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka mobilized her KCCA management team to visit the survivors of the Kitez garbage disaster at the Emergency Response Center on Sunday, August 18, 2024. The visit was preceded by prayers by the Catholics, followed by the Anglicans, and then a luncheon.
They gathered in the tent, singing and praying together under the leadership of a local pastor. In her speech, Kisaka expressed her sympathy for the survivors and expressed her heartfelt condolences, saying: “We must keep faith with this storm.”
Survivors gathered around Yoshizaka, who hugged them, let them cry and listened to their stories of survival. So far, a total of 266 survivors have gathered. So far, 35 bodies have been found and 18 people have been rescued from the rubble.
Kisaka was joined by KCCA governors and deputy governors including Sheila Birungi, Grace Akullo, Vincent Byendirama, Ezra Sebuwufu, Dr. Zalwango, William Epiaka, Maurice Kairania, Abel Mugalya, Daniel Muhumuza at the heartwarming event.
The mayor was represented by John Mary Sebuwufu and Oliver Namazzi. Kisaka said the visit was in keeping with traditional customs of serving meals to the bereaved families and grieving with them. She thanked the Kampala community for its outpouring of support for the victims.
In addition, according to the Uganda Red Cross, there are many children in the camps where the families of the survivors live. As part of providing psychosocial support and emotional healing, the Red Cross, together with other volunteers, engages them in child-friendly games. Red Cross officials said child-friendly spaces support the well-being of children in emergencies or disasters.
