Santo Domingo, El Novo Diary – The communicator and political analyst Julio González warned this Monday that he fears the consequences of exaggerating the figures of the Attorney General of the Dominican Republic.
González said raising the profile of the attorney general could have serious consequences for institutions and democracy in the Dominican Republic.
He stressed that whatever the method of appointing the attorney general — whether through the National Judicial Council or through a shortlist submitted to Congress — there will always be political nuances in the process.
The commentator mentioned this issue during his participation in the show “El Nuevo Diario de la Noche”, broadcast on the digital platform El Nuevo Diario TV, together with communicators Ray Raul Sully and Felix Javier.
In this sense, he said the difference is important considering that it lies in the training and institutional commitment of the appointees.
“Any method of appointing an attorney general implies a certain degree of politicization. However, what is fundamental is the training of the candidate and his or her commitment to the institution,” he noted.
The analyst also believes that the highest representative of any country’s public ministers should be the power of the incumbent president, as this role is very important for justice and maintaining democratic principles.
“The problem arises when the profile of the attorney general becomes too big, when too much power is given to him without the right profile, expertise and social standing. This poses a real danger to democracy,” he explained.
He pointed out that the key is to maintain a proper balance and avoid the image of the Department of Justice becoming a tool of excessive power.
“A solid institutional framework and effective democracy depend on accountability and fairness in selection and performance in key positions,” he said.
