A total of 1,300 traffic vests were handed over to organisations playing a role in road safety at the Legal Police Department meeting room earlier this week. The safety vests are designed to increase visibility for cyclists, moped riders and motorcyclists.
The Suriname Police Department received 500 vests, the Suriname Fire Department received 300, and 500 were used for delivery services that use mopeds as part of their work. This is an initiative of Gow2, which has handed over the vests to the Road Safety Institute (VVI). Delivery services include Ride Eats, KFC and Pizza Hut.
The Gow2 project is part of the “Refuel Safely, Always Safe” campaign, which coincides with the 12th annual Road Safety Month.
The theme of Road Safety Month is “Road Safety Starts with Me”. VVI Director Joanne A Draai stressed that in addition to individual responsibility, solving road safety issues requires a joint effort. “We also want to emphasize that safe driving behavior is crucial.”
Marc Refos, Marketing Asset Manager at Gow2 Suriname, said the campaign focuses on raising awareness of safety rules at gas stations, such as turning off the engine and avoiding the use of mobile phones, Suriname Communications Service (CDS) wrote. He stressed that achieving this goal requires a joint effort and said that there is close cooperation with the fire brigade and the police.
