Cyprus on Monday nominated Costas Kadis, a scientist who held several cabinet posts in previous governments, as its candidate for the European Commission post, Reuters reported Report.
If the EU parliament approves the 57-year-old for the post, he would replace Cyprus Health Minister Stella Kyriakidou. Kadis was not among the rumoured candidates for the position.
“Dr. Kadis’ experience in institutional positions in the Republic of Cyprus as well as his academic skills and qualifications were key factors in his selection for this important position,” Cyprus government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said in a written statement.
Lethimbiotis said Cyprus President Nicos Christoudoulis informed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen of Nicosia’s choice in a phone call last week.
Kadis, a biologist with a focus on biodiversity conservation who served as minister of health, education and agriculture in two governments, is currently acting dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at a private university in Cyprus.
