Western Bureau:
A catering manager for a well-known local hotel chain is being investigated by police for shooting another man while shooting birds in bushes at Barrett Hall in St James on Saturday.
While police have acknowledged the incident and confirmed the identity of the deceased, as of last night they had not officially released the name of the gunman who fired the fatal shot or the status of the investigation.
The incident was not recorded in the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Daily Incident Report yesterday.
The deceased was reportedly named Antonio Davis, 38, a woodcarver from Kerry Park in Trelawny, who was hired by a bird hunting team to pick up birds that had been shot.
According to people familiar with the matter, at about 6:30 a.m., the hotel manager was crouching on a high platform aiming at a bird when the platform began to collapse. As he tried to keep his balance, the gun suddenly went off and a bullet was fired. The bullet hit Davis’ upper body and he died on the spot.
“From all indications, this appears to have been an unfortunate accident as there is no indication of any malicious intent.” The Gleaners “Everyone who took part in the shooting tour is saddened by the incident and mourns with the family of the deceased,” the source said.
Following the incident, St. James Police Chief Eron Samuels The Gleaners It said further details would be provided through the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Communications Unit.
The 2024 Jamaican game bird hunting season has just opened and will run from mid-August to late September. According to bird hunting rules, hunting is allowed between sunrise and sunset.
The National Environment and Planning Agency is responsible for monitoring and ensuring that necessary rules are followed. Hunters must follow the guidelines of the Wildlife Conservation Act.
While game shooting is considered a relatively safe sport, shooting accidents that result in fatalities do occur from time to time. In April 2022, Montego Bay top racer David Watkins, 52, was killed in a bizarre shooting while deer hunting in Portland.
Watkins was reportedly walking with his shotgun slung over his shoulder when he slipped and the gun went off, striking him under the armpit. He reportedly died at the scene.
