Government uses AI and machine learning to curb online gambling

Jakarta(ANTARA) –
The Ministry of Communications and Information is developing a system to monitor and block negative content, including online gambling sites, using machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

The ministry’s director of application control, Teguh Arifiyadi, made the remarks during an online discussion on Monday.

“With machine learning, our system can learn from existing patterns and continually update blocking methods as the techniques used by criminals evolve,” he said.

He said the measure would not only block access but also curb the spread of new websites, which often appear hours after old ones are blocked.

But he admitted that due to the huge amount of funds circulating in online gambling activities, advanced technology alone is not enough.

“It is worth more than 300 trillion rupiah (about 19.27 billion U.S. dollars), and it may even reach 400 trillion rupiah (about 25.7 billion U.S. dollars) by the end of this year,” he revealed.

To this end, the ministry is working with the National Police (Polri), the Financial Services Authority (OJK), the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK), and other ministries and agencies to strengthen monitoring and action.

“For example, we are working with the OJK to block bank accounts used for online gambling transactions,” he said.

According to PPATK Deputy Minister of Strategy and Cooperation Tuti Wahyuningsih, the amount of money circulating in online gambling will reach 327 trillion rupiah (about 21 billion US dollars) in 2023, involving 3.7 million people.

She noted that in 2024, transactions in 4,548 accounts used for online gambling deposits had been stopped, with the total amount blocked estimated to be IDR 10.39 billion (about USD 667,478).

Meanwhile, OJK Sharia Banking Department head Deden Firman said that through the online gambling eradication task force, the OJK will focus on two things: prevention and action.

On the prevention side, OJK is educating the community and ensuring consumer protection.

Firman added: “As for operations, we are working with all parties, including the Ministry of Communications and Information, to block accounts used for online gambling activities.”
