Mexico City– Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador this Monday requested information about the agreement negotiated by the Chapitos (children of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán) with American authorities following the arrest of Ismael el Mayo’ Zambada, co-founder of the Sinaloa drug cartel.
“We will wait for the content of the agreement, we are asking for information, the Office of the Prosecutor (Attorney General of the Republic) is investigating and will continue to do so, the Mexican Prosecutor’s Office must inform how the investigation is going and we are confident that we will do our job well”, he commented.
The president responded during the morning session to news published by the Milenio newspaper that “El Chapo’s” sons, Ovidio Guzman and Joaquin Guzman López, and his chief of security, Nestor Isidro Perez “El Nini,” are negotiating with the United States to obtain more favorable sentences.
U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar reiterated on Friday that Guzman López “voluntarily surrendered” to the United States on July 25, when he arrived on a plane with the allegedly deceived Zambada at the airport near the U.S. city of El Paso, Texas.
“This is not surprising in this context, since even the U.S. government itself said they had been maintaining relations with Guzmán López in agreement, as was reported when Mr. Zambada was arrested and transferred to the United States,” López Obrador mentioned.
Even so, Mexico’s president insisted Washington has not yet provided all the information Mexico has requested about Zambada’s arrest, specifically how the plane arrived in the neighboring country and what happened to the pilot.
He also called for clarification on the roles of agencies such as the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
He believes: “There are a lot of anomalies in information management and there is collusion between the media, institutions and the government, so everything that is said must be treated with caution.”
The president believes it is normal for the United States to seek deals with criminals to obtain information.
He agreed that “if there is collusion between criminals and the authorities, as has happened, those responsible must be punished.”
But he clarified that “everything must be proven because if it is not, foreign governments use this mechanism to conquer, to blackmail, to bring another government to its knees, and that is interference, it is a violation of the sovereignty of peoples and countries.” EFE/IR
