200 teachers to receive financial education training – Jamaica Information Service

Through a partnership between the Ministry of Education and the Youth and Profit Startup Academy, 200 teachers will receive scholarships worth $31 million to receive financial education training.

The scholarship aims to improve the financial literacy of faculty members, who will then pass on their knowledge to students and the wider society.

Finance Minister Faywal Williams said financial training for teachers is the first step in equipping citizens to build wealth, which she noted is a catalyst for national development.

“(It) is key to unlocking opportunities for career development and financial security. Educators play a critical role in shaping future generations and they must be equipped with the knowledge to effectively manage financial resources. By investing in teachers’ financial education, we are investing in the sustainability and advancement of our education system,” the Education Minister said.

She spoke at the Wealth Accumulation 2024 Conference on August 16 at the AC Marriott Hotel in Kingston.

Minister Williams stressed the value of developing financial skills at an early age, which he said would enable young people to make smart financial decisions, avoid debt traps and build a stable financial future for themselves and the country.

“Financial literacy opens doors of opportunity for our students, enabling them to pursue higher education, start their own businesses and secure financial independence. I am committed to incorporating broader financial literacy education into our school curriculum to ensure every student has the opportunity to develop these critical skills,” she promised.

“It is not enough to excel academically; our students must be equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate financial situations confidently and competently,” the Minister added.

Keisha Bailey, CEO of Profit Jumpstarter Academy, said the partnership with the Ministry of Education was a strategic step in building key aspects of the education curriculum.

She noted that providing scholarships “will ensure that educators learn how to build wealth so that they can teach students. They can also help parents, and by doing so, we can build a better Jamaica. That is how we build a better world.”
