On August 17, 2024, Brigadier General Abdulrahman Tiyani, Chairman of the National Committee for the Defence of the Fatherland and Head of State, issued a presidential decree to reorganize the Niger government. This adjustment is to adapt to the requirements of the current transformation and adjust the composition of the government team.
The decree provides for the appointment of Dr. Sahabi Oumarou as the new Minister of Petroleum. The latter replaces Mr. Barké Bako Mahaman Moustapha, who was appointed to this position during the formation of the first transitional government, formed on August 9, 2023, consisting of 21 ministers.
This change is part of the Transitional Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its efficiency and capacity to manage the country’s strategic resources, especially in a sector as important as oil. Dr. Sahabi Oumarou has been recognized for his expertise and experience, and his appointment aims to create new dynamism within the Ministry by aligning its actions with the priorities identified by the CNSP.
The reorganization announced by the Head of State therefore demonstrates his desire to ensure that the government has the necessary skills to lead the country through this period of transition. The decree also reaffirms the CNSP’s commitment to establishing effective governance in line with the aspirations of the Nigerien people.
