The family and friends of firefighter Shamil Miri who had been looking forward to his return on Wednesday, least they expected was that he would be killed in a stabbing incident as they knew him to be a peacemaker.
The 33-year-old Kingston Rum Lane resident, who had recently been on vacation abroad, was reportedly killed during a confrontation with another Jamaican at a business in Gaylord, Michigan, where both were temporary workers.
Both men were found with severe cuts and puncture wounds and were taken to hospital, where Myri died and the other underwent emergency surgery, according to reports.

“Everyone is in disbelief, he shouldn’t have died, the way he died. He wasn’t mixed up, so he was stabbed to death, I could never imagine, I know nothing. My brother had a great personality, always smiling, humble, progressive,” she said, sobbing. “He loved his family. He loved his two children.”
Mattox stressed that her brother was not a troublemaker, a fact that made his death all the more shocking for everyone.
“My brother only cared about parties, fashion, family, work and football. My brother never caused trouble for others, he was a peacemaker. He never created conflict. Everyone can attest to that,” she added.
When asked how she was coping with her father’s death, Mattox said: “I wasn’t doing well. I was very close to my brother. We grew up together. I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t sleep. I had a child, I couldn’t function. Every minute I looked at his picture, I would tear up, like I was numb.”
She said her mother was also in poor health and often burst into tears. Her brother was the eldest son in the family and her mother was the second child.
She pointed out that her brother had two children, a one-year-old and an 11-year-old son, and explained that the older child was really suffering.
“He was crying and saying the pain was more on the inside,” Mattox said of her nephew.
According to the grieving sister, her brother was looking forward to spending the rest of the summer with the kids and upgrading his car when he returned.
One of the most humble people
At the Trench Township fire station where Miri worked, the mood was sad as co-workers spoke of him and the impact his death had on them.
They all said he was one of the most “humble” people they knew and that he was very quiet and reserved.
One of his friends, Ramon Brivitt, said he was at home on Saturday and when he checked his phone he found connection problems and 15 missed calls. He called one of them back and learned the devastating news.
“When I hung up the phone, I was just devastated,” he said, calling his colleague a great firefighter who loved his job.
He smiled as he recalled his last phone call with Meray during his leave. In a three-way call with another colleague who was also on leave, Meray said: “If we don’t come back, the brigade will be in chaos.”
Myries’ best friend Kamaro Morgan called him a brother and he was so excited that he had to sit down during the interview. The Gleaners.
He said: “Yesterday, when I heard the news, I burst into tears and when I got home, I fell asleep.”
Meanwhile, Mattox said family members are anxious to know what happened because they don’t know any more details than what’s been reported in the media.
“We wanted to know because he was at work but we never heard of him being involved in anything,” she said.
