Boxer Mike Tyson, 58, has recovered from a medical scare that delayed his return to the ring. The boxer, once considered the most dangerous man in the world, could be putting himself in danger if he puts on the gloves again. However, when asked why he continued to pursue the lawsuit against Jake Paul, he responded on Sunday.
“Because I can. Who else can do it but me? Who else can he fight to make it happen?” Tyson said as he addressed the crowd at a packed news conference, as fans cheered the former world heavyweight champion and booed Paul.
“We just need to hear the facts. “We have a YouTuber who is fighting the best boxer of all time,” he said.
Tyson and Paul resumed organizing competition, and the game is scheduled to be held on November 15 at the home of the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington, Texas.
Tyson, who was scheduled to meet on July 20, felt nauseous and dizzy on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles in May, symptoms his representatives attributed to an ulcer problem.
Tyson said he resumed training two or three weeks ago and felt good.
“Hey listen, I’m ready,” Tyson said.
The undisputed heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990, Tyson (50-6, 44 KOs) retired in 2005 before returning for an exhibition bout against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020. Fans were excited about his return, and many of them attended the final day of the Fanatics Festival in New York on Sunday.
Paul (10-1, 7 KOs) faced fans who booed him and boxers on the other side of the stage.
“New York, you guys are like Mike Tyson,” Paul said. “They were good 20 years ago.”
Tyson’s most dominant days are actually long behind him, and Paul understands that he may not receive as much credit for defeating such a weak opponent. Still, the former Disney Channel star, who insists he will become a world boxing champion, said there are benefits to taking on Tyson even now.
“Great moment, great pressure, great stage, one of the best to do it, more experienced than me, more fights than me, I’m going to learn a lot from this fight and this stage of training,” Paul said. “So it will help me for future fights and everything I want to achieve.”
Whereas he preferred to face Tyson before, he now craves a second chance.
“I’m ready, you need to rest. Is your stomach still hurting?” he said to Tyson.
The fight, which will be broadcast on Netflix, will be a formal contest, though both sides have agreed to eight two-minute rounds, with heavier gloves than usual.
The most legitimate fight on the card might be the one before it, when super featherweight champion Katie Taylor and Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano will repeat Taylor’s thrilling 2022 victory in the first ever women’s title fight at Madison Square Garden.
