This picturesque region has retained its authentic Ukrainian atmosphere and was the birthplace of a famous writer whose works are still popular today.
The outstanding playwright was fascinated by the local nature, the originality of the village and its inhabitants. As a child, he often liked to write down legends, stories, songs and folk beliefs in his diary. This habit helped him to create the famous story collection “Evenings at Dikanka Farm”.
There are many places in Poltava that are closely connected with the life of Nikolai Vasilyevich. Which places are worth visiting – read on.
Previously, there was a family estate here, where the young prose writer was brought after his baptism. He spent his childhood here, and later recalled this time with particular trepidation. As an adult, the writer often returned home to visit his mother and sisters. He also participated in the landscaping of the estate.
His family had no property. Despite this, they frequently visited neighbors and relatives and entertained guests themselves.
My mother often told her son stories about the “Last Judgment” and the torments of sinners in Hell. My father told humorous stories and anecdotes.
Until 1943, the building remained in its original form. Then the Nazis completely destroyed it. But as early as 1984, the estate was restored. During this period, the reserve – the Nikolai Gogol Museum was grandly opened.
Here you can see a pond, grottoes on the shore and a centuries-old garden. Be sure to visit the author’s personal account. They housed him in a hut.
The village was the birthplace of the writer Doctor Mikhail Trohimovsky. Subsequently, it was converted into a memorial. Here are the poet’s personal belongings and first editions. Unfortunately, during World War II, everything was destroyed by the Germans. But after the end of hostilities, the manuscripts were restored.
The most beautiful temple on the left bank of Ukraine. The prose writer’s baptism took place here. In total, there were 12 children in his family – 6 boys and the same number of girls. However, some of them died at a young age.
By the way, there are regular buses from Myrgorod, Poltava, Kremenchug and Lubny. Trains run to the city from Kiev, Uzhgorod and Konstantinovka.
A visit here is a must, because even Nikolai himself recalled this place in his works. Zabokritskaya Square attracts tens of thousands of buyers and sellers every year. Believe it or not, they even sell cars and agricultural equipment here.
You can also eat delicious food and buy souvenirs here. Of course, you can also chat and take pictures with Gogol’s heroes and folk artists.
Admission is free.
The village is famous for the poet’s works. People believe that the heroes in his works are based on real people.
Gogol mentioned the Trinity in his story “The Night Before Christmas”. Vakula painted here the devils from the hell in the book “Viy”. By the way, sacred ceremonies are still performed here.
The Church of St. Nicholas is also located here, where the writer’s mother, Maria Ivanovna, used to meet frequently. After the death of her first two children, she repeatedly prayed to St. Nicholas and the Virgin.
The shrine itself is in the form of a rotunda. Its history is more than 200 years old. According to legend, the image of St. Nicholas the Miraculous Worker appeared on one of the stumps. After that, a wooden cross was installed on this site, and then a church. By the way, the logs are still preserved to this day.
Here, the future prose writer studied at the Higher Scientific Gymnasium of Prince Bezborodko. It was at school that he was able to show his literary potential. In 1881, the world’s first monument to a writer was erected in the city. We managed to do this with donations from the townspeople.
The sculpture is located on the street of the same name in the main park of Nizhny Novgorod.
