(CNS): Four people were arrested on suspicion of drink-driving early Saturday morning as police urged motorists not to drive under the influence of drugs and alcohol to stop “carnage on the roads.” Police on Cayman Brac arrested a 19-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man on suspicion of drink-driving after the two collided on Cotton Tree Bay Road at around 2:20 a.m. that day. Both were arrested for failing to provide a sample.
The man driving the Jeep was not injured. The woman driving the Honda was taken to Faith Hospital by ambulance for treatment of minor injuries.
At about the same time, on Grand Cayman, police spotted a vehicle traveling along Cypros Road stopped near Kennedy Drive. The vehicle was stationary with its lights on and the engine running for several minutes. When officers approached, they discovered the driver was asleep at the wheel.
When he was woken up and questioned by police, he appeared to be intoxicated. A roadside breath test showed his alcohol level was three times over the legal limit. The 52-year-old Georgetown resident was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Shortly before 1:50 a.m. that morning, police responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision on South Church Street near Denham Thompson Road and found the driver had left the scene. However, he was found nearby a short time later with a small bag in his hand. While speaking with officers, he began to behave aggressively, making threats and damaging one of the officers’ cellphones. Officers smelled alcohol on his breath.
The 24-year-old Bodden Town resident was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run, DUI and property damage. But while he was handcuffed, he continued to behave aggressively and tried to evade arrest, causing minor injuries to himself and an officer. When officers searched his bag, they found a substance suspected to be marijuana. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possession and use of marijuana, threatening violence, disorderly conduct and assaulting a police officer.
Superintendent Roje Williams said the incidents serve as a reminder for drivers not to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“All drivers involved now face legal action and a range of possible penalties,” he said. “However, it is only by chance that their actions did not result in more serious and life-changing consequences, such as serious injury to themselves and other road users, or in the worst case, loss of life. As a community, we must urgently change our attitudes to drink driving if we want to reduce the number of tragedies on our roads.”
