MOGADISHU (HOL) — Somalia’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Muallem Fiki has criticised the remarks made by the British Ambassador to Somalia, Mike Netavrianakis, calling them a “blatant violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and unity”.
The controversy stems from a post by British Ambassador Nitavrianakis on X (formerly Twitter) saying that the UK is “proud to support the excellent work of HALO Trust in Somalia and Somaliland (and other parts of the world)”.
The Ambassador made the remarks while discussing with HALO Regional Directors and the new Country Directors the progress of their successful work.
Minister Fiki strongly objected to this, noting that “split and re-divided a unified entity under two different names is totally unacceptable and a blatant attack on Somalia’s sovereignty and unity.”
The HALO Trust is a UK-based charity specialising in mine clearance and explosive ordnance disposal with a presence in Somalia and Somaliland. The organisation has been working in the region since 1999.
In southern Somalia, particularly in conflict-affected areas, HALO is also involved in surveying and marking dangerous areas to protect civilians. In Somaliland, HALO has cleared thousands of hectares of land, enabling local residents to return to their homes and use the land for agriculture.
In June, the Somali government passed a resolution entitled “Defining National Security Threats”, which includes eight clauses, including terrorism, separatism, state fragility, open borders, foreign interference, climate change, cyber security risks, and social crisis risks.
