NASSAU | July 1, 2024 marks the 34th anniversary of Dr. Cornwell S. Brown’s return to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and the opening of the Bahamas Heart Centre (BHC), where he created and implemented a “collaborative model of care” to ensure that all people in The Bahamas, the Caribbean and beyond have access to quality cardiac care.

To mark the occasion, Dr. Brown and his team paid a courtesy visit to the Honorable Ms. Cynthia Pratt.

During the visit, Dr. Brown expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of The Bahamas over the past four decades in the field of medicine and thirty-five years in the field of cardiology and other advanced health care services. He shared highlights of his career, including his pioneering work in the field of cardiology and the establishment of cutting-edge medical facilities that provide or have provided specialized health care services in The Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands, Jamaica and Antigua. Dr. Brown has played a major role in the development of advanced health care services in the country, particularly in the areas of treatment, prevention and research of heart disease, cancer and kidney disease.

Her Excellency the Governor commended Dr. Brown for his tireless dedication and contribution to the state’s health sector. She recognized that Dr. Brown has positively impacted the lives of countless people not only through his medical expertise, but also through his leadership and commitment to medical education and community outreach.

Just recently, former Prime Minister Perry Christie underwent a successful aortic angioplasty and stenting procedure at the Bahamas Heart Centre, performed by Dr. Bimal Francis and Dr. Cornwell Brown and a team of dedicated professionals. After being transferred from the Emergency Room at Doctors Hospital, the emergency surgery was performed at the state-of-the-art specialist centre at the Bahamas Medical Pavilion. The medical team, including Dr. Zulina Salas and Dr. Henry Coleman, provided expert care to ensure Prime Minister Christie’s surgery went smoothly.

Dr. Brown expressed pride in the team’s outstanding performance in the emergency room and the advanced care provided by the specialist center, and said this first surgery was also a significant moment in the partnership between the Bahamas Heart Center and Doctors Hospital. Dr. Brown stressed the importance of this advanced cardiac care to the entire country and looked forward to the future implementation of the National Health Insurance Catastrophic Illness Program to make this life-saving service more accessible to the entire Bahamian public.

In his message to the Governor, Dr. Brown stressed the importance of collaboration and teamwork and thanked the medical team for their invaluable support throughout his career. He noted that their shared vision and collective efforts have been key to the success and growth of his efforts, achievements and contributions.

The visit concluded with a brief discussion on the future of healthcare in The Bahamas. Dr. Brown and his team expressed their commitment to continue working to improve healthcare services and access for all Bahamians. The Governor expressed his best wishes for their continued success and contribution to the well-being of the nation.

Dr. Brown’s 34th birthday is a testament to his passion, perseverance, and the trust that the Bahamian community has placed in him over the years. Looking ahead, he and his team will continue to work to improve healthcare in The Bahamas and ensure that the country continues to enjoy world-class medical care.
