Around 750 Sierra Leoneans are currently stranded in a camp run by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Agadez, Niger Republic.
According to their spokesman, Musa Alie Sesay, the camps are populated by children and women who face serious health care challenges.
He confirmed that they had been vetted by IOM officials and were ready to return to Sierra Leone. βOur only problem was that the Sierra Leone government refused to allow IOM officials in Niamey to allow us to leave the country and return to Sierra Leoneβ¦We were all thoroughly vettedβ¦We are Sierra Leoneans who fled our country for a wider worldβ¦Some of us were arrested in Libya, Morocco and Algeria and sent back to Niger, where we settled before embarking on the dangerous crossing in small boats.
They called on the Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Freetown, to expedite the process of their repatriation to Sierra Leone.
