August 17, 2024 (Port Sudan) – Sudan’s ruling Sovereign Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said on Saturday that a delegation had been sent to Geneva to discuss the implementation of the Jeddah Declaration, a humanitarian ceasefire agreement signed in May 2023 between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Burhan told the Sudanese-Egyptian media delegation that Sudan had insisted in three contacts with the United States that it would not attend the Geneva talks unless the Jeddah Declaration was implemented, adding that the United States had agreed to hold talks with the military-led delegation.
“We will send a government delegation to meet with them and Saudi Arabia, the sponsor of the Jeddah Declaration, to discuss steps to implement it,” Burhan said.
Sources told Sudan Tribune that the delegation left for Geneva on Saturday.
Burhan reiterated that the Jeddah Declaration calls for the rapid security forces to withdraw from civilian homes and facilities in Khartoum, Gezira, Sennar and Darfur. He firmly added: “There is no turning back on this matter. If they refuse, we will continue to fight them until they are forced to withdraw.”
He stressed that the government would not go to Geneva to negotiate a new agreement and that if Washington really wanted peace, they should pressure the Rapid Security Forces to lift the siege of El Fasher in North Darfur and stop attacks on civilians.
